If your car smells weird, it could be telling you that you need to have it serviced.

1. If you smell hot oil, you could have oil leaking into your car’s exhaust system. Look for oil on the pavement or smoke coming out of the engine area. Be sure to shut off the engine before searching for the leak.

2. If you smell gas, there may be a fuel leak involving the gas tank or a fuel injector. Remember that if there’s the smell of gas, there may be a possible fire hazard, so be cautious.

3. If you smell burnt rubber, your belts or hoses may be loose or misplaced. Shut off the engine, let it cool off, and inspect.

4. If you smell rotten eggs, the catalytic converter could be faulty and not properly converting hydrogen sulfide to sulfur dioxide.

5. If you smell burning carpet, there could be brake issues. Have them inspected as soon as possible.

6. If you smell syrup, your car may be leaking engine coolant. Turn off the engine and allow the vehicle to cool off before inspecting. Remember to never try to open the radiator cap when it’s hot.
